Right now there's a heatwave rolling through Holland and I am not amused. My house is well isolated and wonderfully warm in winter, but in summer, it's a nightmare. Days just drag on by with nothing happening. Recently I had a discussion with someone on the phone on how we seem to lose the ability to think when it gets too hot. Since I don't have the energy to do anything else, I've been thinking on it and made a small list on what seems to be the first and the last three things that disable in my brain. To first to go.
1. Anything involving extended concentration.
No big shocker there. Anything that requires constant focus becomes way too hard when the heat starts building. Unfortunately, that includes school work, but also things like complicated 3D models.2. Handling new experiences.
Second to go is my ability to deal with new situations, especially if it needs to be done quickly. Again, not a big shocker; if your ability to think goes down, your reaction times likely will, too.3. Videogames
This. I hate this. It's partially due to 1 and 2; fast-paced games require quick thinking and dealing with new situations, slow-paced games require extended concentration, but even other elements just fail. I haven't gamed for a long time. It's just too much effort. Not to mention the fact that my brain isn't the only thing that overheats in this weather... I really need to buy a better cooling system for my computer. Maybe I can get one installed in my brain, too?
Now, the next part I found much more interesting. Since the heat has built up to the point where I can't do ANYTHING (this has mostly passed now, thankfully. Basic functions have restored) I've been able to see what shuts down LAST. What is the most hard-wired into my brain? The last to go
3. Roleplaying ability.
Having done this for YEARS, my brain is practically wired to do it. It's only when I'm really sick, tired or otherwise mentally bothered that I become unable to play in my little fantasy lands. Maybe because it's a more reasonable temperature in there.2. Logical reasoning.
This one goes out the window much sooner for most people, but not me. In fact, my main form of entertainment right now is logic problems and digging through D&D source books and thinking of character optimization methods. Ties in with number 3 nicely as well.1. Mathematical skills.
"Bwhaaaaa? MATH is the easiest for you?!" Yes, go figure. This became apparent yesterday. I could barely put one thought behind the other, making a sandwich was hard, but calculating the diameter a 1000 lb iron sphere would have? No problem! Just multiply that with this, divide by so and so... Okay, I'll need a calculator for the cube root, but... There we go! When I had the answer I literally stared at my screen in confusion about how the Hell I just did that.
So, to anyone reading this: What tends to go first and last for your brain during a heatwave?
